पवनः पवतामस्मि रामः शस्त्रभृतामहम् । झषाणां मकरश्चास्मि स्रोतसामस्मि जाह्नवी ॥ ३१ ॥

pavanaḥ pavatām asmi rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtām aham jhaṣāṇāṃ makaraś cāsmi srotasām asmi jāhnavī

Translation

Of purifiers I am the wind; Rama of warriors I; and I am Makara of fishes; of streams the Gangâ am I.

Annie Besant · The Bhagavad-Gita, translated by Annie Besant (4th ed., 1922) — Wikisource · Public Domain

Explanation

The wind among purifiers, Rama among warriors, the makara among fish, and the Ganga among rivers. A named, geographically specific river standing alongside abstractions like time and consciousness elsewhere in the list shows how wide a net “vibhuti” is meant to cast. A single named river — the Ganges — sits in the same list as Time and consciousness. The net is deliberately wide: the specific and the universal are equally valid places to see Krishna.

Commentary

Site Commentary

Ritual most often reaches for water or fire as its purifying agent — things you can see act on what they cleanse. Krishna names wind instead: a purifier that works by contact you can feel but never watch, moving through and past whatever it clears. It’s a fitting choice for a list whose deepest lesson is close to invisible too, the underlying constant no single glorious example fully shows.

Lessons

Personal

  • The most important change happening in your own life is often not the visible, dramatic one — notice the quiet, ongoing background influence, a habit, a relationship, an environment, doing real work on you without ever announcing itself.

Professional

  • The biggest quality improvement on a team usually comes from an invisible ongoing practice, like careful code review or on-call hygiene, not from a flashy new tool — give credit and attention to the background habit doing the actual work.

Family & Social

  • The thing that keeps a household calm is usually an invisible, ongoing habit rather than a dramatic gesture — notice and protect the quiet daily pattern instead of only investing effort in the occasional big display of care.
