Sanskrit

वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि देवानामस्मि वासवः । इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि भूतानामस्मि चेतना ॥ २२ ॥

vedānāṃ sāmavedo'smi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ indriyāṇāṃ manaś cāsmi bhūtānām asmi cetanā

Translation

Of the Vedas I am the Sâma-Veda; I am Vâsava of the Shining Ones; and of the senses I am the mind; I am of living beings the intelligence.

Annie Besant · The Bhagavad-Gita, translated by Annie Besant (4th ed., 1922) — Wikisource · Public Domain

Explanation

Continues the category-plus-best-member pattern into scripture and psychology: among the Vedas, the Sama-Veda; among the senses, the mind; among living beings, cetanā — consciousness itself. That last clause is a step up in abstraction from the others: not a best example within a class, but the very faculty of awareness by which any of the other examples could be recognized at all. Bhūtānām asmi cetanā — “in beings I am consciousness” — is not a foremost example but the condition of there being examples at all: the awareness by which any vibhūti is noticed.

Commentary

Site Commentary

Three of this verse’s four examples are external — a scripture, a god, an organ of perception — but the fourth, cetanā, is the very thing doing the noticing of the first three. Krishna slips from listing objects to naming the subject who could list them at all, and doesn’t pause to mark the shift. The most extraordinary claim in the verse needs nothing further away than the awareness reading this sentence right now.

Lessons

Personal

  • When you're searching for what's most valuable in your own life, don't only scan for the most impressive external achievement — the plain fact of your own awareness, the thing doing the noticing, deserves the same wonder you'd give a rarer prize.

Professional

  • When auditing what makes a team effective, resist stopping at the visible outputs like dashboards or deliverables, and name the less visible thing enabling all of it, such as shared situational awareness — it's usually the actual scarce resource.

Family & Social

  • Before crediting a family's strength to its biggest visible achievements, notice the quieter capacity underneath them — the attentiveness that lets anyone even see what's going on — and give it the credit an achievement would normally get instead.
