तत्त्ववित्तु महाबाहो गुणकर्मविभागयोः । गुणा गुणेषु वर्तन्त इति मत्वा न सज्जते ॥
tattvavit tu mahābāho guṇakarmavibhāgayoḥ guṇā guṇeṣu vartanta iti matvā na sajjate
Translation
But he, O mighty-armed, who knoweth the essence of the divisions of the qualities and functions, holding that "the qualities move amid the qualities," is not attached.

Explanation
The corrective to verse 27’s delusion: knowing that it’s gunas acting on gunas — senses, themselves material, engaging sense-objects, also material — rather than a self doing anything, is what actually produces non-attachment. This reframes non-attachment less as a moral effort of will and more as a consequence of correct metaphysical understanding, a thread the text develops much further in chapter 14. “Guṇā guṇeṣu vartante” — the strands move among the strands — becomes almost a refrain; it recurs nearly verbatim at BG 5.9 and underlies BG 14.19. Non-attachment, on this account, is what is left once the misattribution stops.

Commentary
Site Commentary
This verse quietly relocates the entire problem of attachment from the will to the intellect. It doesn’t say “try not to be attached” — it says know correctly, and non-attachment follows as a byproduct, not a target pursued directly. That’s a very different kind of effort: not gritting through desire, but replacing the belief that generates the grip in the first place.

Lessons
Personal
- If willpower alone keeps failing to loosen a habit's grip on you, try attacking the belief underneath it instead of the behavior directly — correct understanding can dissolve attachment that brute effort couldn't budge.
Professional
- When a team keeps white-knuckling through a recurring problem via extra effort and vigilance, check whether the real fix is a corrected mental model of the system instead — sometimes the fix is seeing the failure mode clearly, not trying harder to avoid it.
Family & Social
- If you keep 'trying harder' not to react a certain way to a family member and it isn't sticking, look instead at the belief driving the reaction — changing what you understand about the situation often loosens a grip that pure effort couldn't.
